Windrush's Location

Windrush can be found three miles west of Keswick in the Northern Lake District. It is situated on the fellside, the north side of Braithwaite village, overlooking the Derwent Valley and Skiddaw. Windrush is a short walk from the village centre and its facilities.

It is ideally located and is an excellent base for your holiday, exploring the the northern Lake District. For the walkers there is no shortage of routes.

  • Right on the doorstep, behind Windrush, is the magnificent Grisedale Pike. A great walk from the cottage and best finished with a cool refreshing pint at the Coledale Inn in Braithwaite village.
  • Behind Braithwaite are some breathtaking peaks and exhilarating walks. Causey Pike, Sail, Crag Hill. All walkable from Windrush.
  • A little further away is the ever popular Cat Bells, a simple yet challenging stroll enjoyed by all levels of walkers. Its not hard to escape the crowd though if you continue on to Maiden Moor, High Spy and maybe Dale Head and Hindscarth, and back to the start via the tranquil Newlands Valley.
  • Buttermere and its surrounding hills are a short drive away through the breathtaking Newlands Valley, providing access to varied and beautiful walks.
  • Borrowdale, to the south of Derwent Water provides some diverse low and high level walks as well as providing access to the Lake Districts inner sanctum of Scafell Pike and its surrounding peaks.
  • Skiddaw is always there to greet you in the morning as you look across the Derwent Valley and can be walked to from Windrush or via a short car journey.
  • Hiding behind Skiddaw lies the dramatic Blencathra, its multitude of routes providing a suitable challenge to any level of walker.
  • The Helvellyn range can be seen from the lounge window and is just waiting to be walked up.
  • Closer to home, Braithwaite How is directly behind Windrush and provides a pleasant alternative to taking the road to Braithwaite. It is also an ideal route for walking your dogs.
  • The Coledale Valley starts from Braithwaite village. It makes a lovelly evening stroll and acts as a return route for many of your exploits in its surrounding peaks.
  • www.braithwaite-walks.co.uk is an excellent website that has lots of walking routes based around Braithwaite Village.

The Whinlatter Pass rises up out of Braithwaite, providing access to NorthWest Cumbria. It rises up through the Whinlatter Forest Park, which has many miles of walking and cycling routes. Its visitors centre is full of useful information and is the main viewing centre for the Bassenthwaite Ospreys. They can be watched raising their young from May to September through a remote video link. Bassenthwaite Lake, where the Ospreys fish, is itself just two miles north of Windrush.
